About this experience

The Colosseum is not simply a ruin — it is the most powerful surviving monument of human ambition, spectacle, and engineering from the ancient world, and the defining symbol of Rome itself. Constructed between 70 and 80 AD under the Flavian emperors Vespasian and Titus, and originally known as the Flavian Amphitheatre, it was built on the former site of Nero's private lake using the labor of tens of thousands of Jewish slaves brought to Rome after the sack of Jerusalem. At its completion, it was the largest amphitheater ever built — a record it still holds — capable of holding between 50,000 and 80,000 spectators across its tiered seating arranged by social class.

For over four centuries, the Colosseum was the entertainment heart of the Roman Empire. Its program of spectacles — the munera — included gladiatorial combat between trained fighters of different fighting styles, venationes (wild animal hunts involving lions, elephants, bears, and exotic creatures from across the empire), executions of criminals and prisoners, and occasionally naval battles when the arena floor was flooded. The logistics of staging these events were remarkable: beneath the arena floor lay the hypogeum, a sophisticated network of tunnels, cages, and hydraulic elevator systems that allowed animals and gladiators to appear from below the arena with theatrical suddenness.

The standard entry ticket grants access to the arena floor — where visitors stand in the precise space that gladiators once entered to face combat — and to the lower tiers, which offer excellent sightlines across the full scale of the interior. Permanent museum exhibits on the main and upper accessible levels present original artifacts, detailed architectural models, and historical information that bring the full operational reality of the Colosseum vividly to life.
